Manchester United are preparing to return to first-team action following their winter break. A trip to League Two side Newport is next up for Erik ten Hagand his team in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm).

Newport booked their fourth round date with Unitedby overcoming non-league Eastleigh after a replay. The two clubs – separated by three divisions and 75 positions in the pyramid – will now meet on our TV screens.

With one eye fixed on the January transfer window, meanwhile, United continue to be linked with several players. United expect a quiet month with regards to incomings due to lingering FFP caution.

This has not prevented their players from being linked with moves away. Reports this lunchtime suggest Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a target for Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr this month.

One player looking to leave the Saudi Pro League is Karim Benzema. The French striker reportedly has his heart set on an exit amid links to the Reds in recent weeks.

United told to chase Benzema deal

United’s legendary striker Andy Cole is in no doubt the Reds should be exploring a move for Al Ittihad striker Karim Benzema this month.

Speaking to Betfred, Cole said:

150%. I would sign him if it was only for a training session. I was very surprised when he left Real Madrid in the summer, but I understand why it happened. That money he’s earning in Saudi Arabia is generational wealth. It’s for his kids and his kids’ kids. When you’re at that age in your career and you’ve already won four La Liga titles, five Champions League trophies and the Ballon d’Or, I can understand why he went to Saudi. Could he do it in the Premier League at his age? 100% considering the way he looks after himself. If Manchester United have the opportunity to sign him, then they should definitely try and make that happen.

United should be all over this Benzema development

With goalscoring a huge problem at United this season, there is no doubt the Reds should be looking at the short-term solution of Benzema.

Let’s not forget he was at the top of his game last season at Real Madrid.

Of course, playing in the Saudi Pro League was a mistake but the Frenchman would massively improve this strikeforce and give Hojlund somebody to mentor him between now and the end of the season.

Benzema ‘wants to leave’ Al Ittihad

United-linked striker Benzema has made it clear he wants to leave Al Ittihad, according to AFP.

A meeting with the board was reportedly ‘bad-tempered’ with the Frenchman making it clear he wants out.

It is understood he was offered a loan move to another Saudi Pro League club but refused.
